OSLO, NORWAY — On May 17th, 2026, the streets of Oslo turned into a vibrant sea of red, white, and blue as Norway celebrated its biggest, most solemn and important national holiday — Constitution Day. The massive scale of the festivities highlighted the deep-rooted cultural heritage of the country, drawing thousands of people in traditional folk costumes (bunad) to the heart of the capital.
The day began across the country with the solemn hoisting of the national flag to the sound of the national anthem. Following this morning tradition, a formal wreath-laying ceremony took place at the National Monument, attended by Storting President Masud Gharahkhani, Oslo Mayor Anne Lindboe, and a military honor guard. Shortly after, the traditional children’s parade filled Karl Johan gate. School children, accompanied by local marching bands, moved in a festive procession through the city center toward the Royal Palace.
From the central balcony of the Royal Palace, King Harald V, standing at the head of both his family and the nation, greeted the passing parade. Alongside the King, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, and Prince Sverre Magnus welcomed the children. The celebrations continued throughout the afternoon with a festive classical music concert inside Oslo Domkirke. Traditional folk dancing also took place at University Square, drawing large crowds of participants and spectators.
